Turning Affirmations into Symbols: How to Create Your Sigil

What are Sigils?

Sigils are symbols that have been used throughout the ages as tools to attract what we wish to see in our lives, whether it's abundance, good health, love, wisdom or clarity. They can be used to protect us from negative energies, to give us confidence and to help us attract only love and good into our lives.

These symbols are deeply personal and empowering. By stating the intention of what you wish to attract into your life and creating your sigil from this positive statement, you can create a powerful symbol that will work only for you.

You can create your sigil in whatever way suits you best, using pen and paper, stones, crystals, pottery - however you choose to create it, as long as your intention is pure and clear, you can't go wrong!

How do they work?

Sigil magic is based on the principles of focused intention, visualisation and manipulation of the subconscious mind. 

You begin by focusing your intention on a specific desire or result. This process of defining your intention creates a mental image of the desired result which, as you visualise it, becomes infused with energy. This energy is then transferred to the sigil, which acts as a symbolic representation of your desires.

The sigil acts as a tool to bypass your conscious mind and communicate directly with your subconscious.

Once your sigil is charged with your intention and energy, it is released into the Universe to do its work, allowing the work to take place without your conscious mind getting in the way.

How do you use them?

Sigils can be used in different ways, depending on the intention you set for them:

Temporary sigils are created for a specific purpose then erased, discarded or removed once the goal has been achieved. Its energy is focused on a specific short-term objective or intention.

They can be made with chalk, stones, salt or any kind of food with the intention of being erased or consumed. You can carry your sigil in your pocket or wallet, draw it on your wrist or phone - the possibilities are endless.

Permanent sigils are designed to last and are often engraved in metal, stone or even used as a design for a tattoo. They are used for long-term intentions and serve as a constant reminder of our objectives.

Destructible sigils are intentionally destroyed or dismantled as part of the activation process. This type of sigil is most often used with the intention of getting rid of anything that no longer serves us fully. The simplest way is to draw your sigil on a piece of paper and then burn it in a safe place.

You can also carve your sigil into a candle using a toothpick with the knowledge that as the candle burns, the sigil will release your intentions into the universe.

How do I Create a Sigil?

*Take the time to clear your space, light a candle and breathe deeply to centre yourself. Start thinking about what you would like to create in your life and decide on the intention of your sigil.

*Write your intention/affirmation/desire in a simple sentence in the present tense, for example: I am calm and content.

*Remove all the vowels from the sentence, keeping only the consonants. Then delete the letters that repeat. The example above becomes "MCLNDT".

Using the grid replace the letters with numbers:

With our phrase "I am calm and content" we are left with the numbers 433542

Use the method that suits you best to draw your sigil. You can be as creative as you like, incorporating swirls or shapes as it suits you until you feel your sigil is ready. There's no right or wrong way to do it, as long as it feels right for you.

When you have created your sigil you can copy it onto a small piece of paper, or engrave it into a candle, however you choose to use it.

Activating your Sigil

Once you've created your sigil, it's time to activate it. The process of activating your sigil will infuse it with your energy and ensure it works for you.

There are several ways of doing this and you'll choose the one that resonates most, although the way you charge it is linked to the intention you're expressing - for example if your intention is release then you will burn your sigil to activate it.

1.      Visualise, or imagine, your sigil in your mind's eye and watch it become more vibrant and powerful with each breath. You can also visualise it radiating out into the Universe.

2.      You can meditate on your sigil by focusing your attention on its form and on the intention you have assigned to it. As you meditate, allow your energy and intention to flow into your sigil, charging it with your personal power.

3.      You can integrate your sigil into a ritual or ceremony designed to amplify its effects. You can use candles, incense or movements associated with your intention.

4.      Singing, chanting and playing sacred sounds are also ways of amplifying the effects of your sigil.

However you choose to create it and activate it, have fun - but always remember that this is powerful magic and it will work for you if you allow it to!
